Thoroughbred Racing had an early presence in Marlborough with Henry Redwood successfully racing horses from his Spring Creek stable throughout Australasia in the 1850’s.
In 1886 the MRC was formed with the amalgamation of at least five small clubs. The racecourse was situated at Riverlands, shifting later to the present site at Waterlea. The Waterlea course is owned jointly with the local harness club.
The MRC has been very successful with large numbers of horses competing from both islands, making the Waterlea Meeting one of the largest clash of inter- island horses at a race meeting in NZ.
The annual two day race meeting is currently held approximately two weeks after Easter each year. With its proximity to the Sounds and with the Waterlea racecourse nestled amongst the Marlborough vineyards this is a very popular race meeting for visitors, owners, trainers and supporters.
