The Greymouth Jockey Club’s first race meeting took place at Omoto, inland from Greymouth in March 1867. The meeting scheduled to run over two days was so successful a third day was added.
The club continues to race at Omoto and each year races in January and March.
The January day is the finale of a popular three day circuit, which commences at Kumara, carries on to Reefton and finishes at Greymouth. The feature race, the Monteiths Brewing Company Greymouth Cup sees the presentation of the silver cup first won by Black Duke in 1931.
The meeting held in March coincides with the Wild Foods Festival in Hokitika and complements the annual race meeting of the Westland Racing Club.
Visitors to Omoto can be assured of good racing and good hospitality in a country setting.
