The Geraldine Racing Club merged with the Timaru Racing Club to form the South Canterbury Racing Club in 2007 - see release below
The Members of the Timaru Racing Club at a Special General Meeting on Thursday 26 July 2007 adopted new rules which effectively allowed for the facilitation of a merger between the Timaru and Geraldine Racing Clubs from the beginning of season, 1 August 2007.
The Members of the Geraldine Racing Club had adopted rules, subject to the Timaru Racing Club doing likewise, to provide for this eventuality also at a Special General Meeting on 27 March 2007.
The "new" Club will be known as the South Canterbury Racing Club (Incorporated) with the individual race days being branded as South Canterbury Racing – Geraldine (Sunday 16 September2007) and South Canterbury Racing – Timaru (Friday, 28 December 2007, Sunday,15 June 2008 and Sunday, July 20 2007).
The new Board of the South Canterbury Racing Club will be made up of representatives of what was the Committee of the Timaru Racing Club and three representatives of what was the Geraldine Racing Club Committee and provides for a raceday Steward role to ensure that maximum participation on raceday of people involved with the new Club.
Outgoing Geraldine Racing Club President and new SCRC Board Member Tom Rooney said "This evolution ensures that the assets of the Clubs, monetary, racedates and people, in South Canterbury will work for the best future interests of thoroughbred racing in the region"
Derek Mayne the Timaru RC and new SCRC President stated "This new structure sets a platform on which to unify South Canterbury Racing people and develop racing in the region. It also provides a structure for other South Canterbury based racing clubs to join should they wish to do so in due course"
Local NZTR Regional Director George Ritchie applauded the move commenting that structures such as these only strengths racing, people and Club involvement in Canterbury.
